    Bibliographic databases contain bibliographic and related data, such as authorship information, document type and number of citations. They are built for searching for sets of records based on ... specified criteria. Increasingly, bibliographic databases are also used for retrieving aggregated information for further analysis, such as studying the number of citations in relation to the year of publication and the number of co-authors, or comparing various research groups in terms of their publishing activity and impact. Todayćs major bibliographic databases are not designed for such purposes, so dedicatedsoftware tools or systems have to be built. But these are always focused on a single problem and designed for occasional production of pre-specified reports, while they do not provide interactive insight into the data and the option to quickly change search criteria. This usually means thatcomprehensive analyses with interactive data exploration, potentially revealing hidden patterns and important exceptions, can not be performed. Similar problems are addressed within the field of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD), which has been defined as the process of finding valid, novel, potentially useful and understandable patterns in data. One of the paths towards that goal is Online Analytical Processing (OLAP), which operatesby means of transforming data into multidimensional cubes with corresponding measures, dimensions and hierarchies. Yet, so far, OLAP methodology has been limited to large corporate databases in banks, insurance companies, major retailers and other companies. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
