  • The calculation of phase diagrams for use in engineering

    The calculation of thermodynamic properties of the state for real substances is possible by classical and statistical thermodynamics. Classical thermodynamics has no insight into the microstructure ... of the substance, but it allows to calculate the thermodynamic function of the state with the assistance of measurement or empirical equations. Statistical thermodynamics, on the other hand, calculates the properties of the state on the basis of intermolecular and intramolecular interactions. The paper features the mathematical model of computating phase diagrams and thermodynamics functions of the state in the liquid, gas and two phase domain with the help of statistical thermodynamics. The paper features all the important contributions (translation, rotation, internal rotation, vibration, intermolecular potential energy and influence of electron and nuclei excitation). Utilized as an intermolecular potential was the Lennard-Jones potential. To calculate the thermodynamic functions of the state in the domain of real gases we developed cluster theory whereas we applied the Barker-Henderson perturbation method for the realm of real liquids.
