  • Scapegoats in The ones who walk away from Omelas, The lathe of heaven and The left hand of darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin : magistrsko delo
    Veit, Anja, 1994-
This thesis explores scapegoats and scapegoating practices from their origins as a prominent biblical ritual of purification, to their social adaptation in modern-day societies - I research how ... scapegoats turned from ceremonial animals to a social metaphor for people. The rite initially represented the community's symbolic removal of sins by the suffering goat, which re-affirmed people's faith in elimination of all evil and enabled them to resume their everyday lives. The whole practice was reshaped over time, as the scapegoating shifted from animals to humans, where the latter seek scapegoats among themselves, primarily to renew the sense of their community and to cast out any evil from it. The scapegoat archetype is, therefore, still relevant today, as its development over the past centuries evolved into a convenient rationalization of faults against innocent individuals in various societies. The second part of this thesis is further divided into analysis of three literary works; "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas", The Lathe of Heaven and The Left Hand of Darkness, one short story and two novels written by Ursula K. Le Guin, where the scapegoat archetype is explored and highlighted through four characters, which, on the basis of innocent suffering, round up realities that question the reader's moral compass.
