  • Improved cellular automaton for follicle recognition in ultrasonic images

    Follicles are small protective sacs containing ova in the cortex of women`s ovaries. Their ultrasound monitoring is very important in diagnosing and treatment of infertility. This paper presents our ... second attempt to develop a cellular automaton (CA) that would be able to locate follicles in the ultrasonic image. In our first attempt we primarily focussed on the detection of large dominant follicles only, whereas the goal of this work is to detect all of them. By enhancing the recognition automaton and adding simple pre-processing and post-ptocessing automata the overall recognition capability was greatly improved. In test ultrasonic images all follicles except one were successfully recognized.
