  • Monitoring increasing speed drives in the steel industry
Vižintin, Jože ; Trstenjak, Marjan ; Sovič, Boštjan
For scale removing from steel strip during rolling process in ironworks a seven-stage centrifugal pump is used, which revolves with 3900 rev/min. The pump drive is performed over an electric motor ... and speed increasing drive. Not long ago portable vibration and temperature gauges were used for vibration and temperature monitoring. Data acquired in that way were supplied only evaluation of deterioration in form of trend lines. However, there was not enough reliable information about causes for deterioration. On the basis of past problems on the speed increasing drive we decided on the introduction of off-line monitoring system. The monitoring system offered several analyses in time and frequency domain and the presentation of results as well. Our aim was to find out the deterioration and system working irregularities before the system breakdown occurred. This offers enough time for preparation of maintenance activities. The beginning of the introduction of the monitoring system coincided with the replacement of the speed increasing drive. Therefore we were able to record the initial state of the system. That state represented the basis for further analyses. The measurements were performed with accelerometers, which were mounted on thehousing in all three co-ordinate system directions. The measuring positions were at the places where we had the highest vibration level using a portable vibration gauge. Deterioration in the speed increasing drive operating increased up to the level that forced us to stop the system working. The obtained data made it possible to carry out the analysis and to determine the causes which had led to the system's breakdown. The obtained results have enriched our knowledge ofthe maintenance of huge systems in steel industry.
