  • Handling context dependence in a human linguistic framework
    Burazer, Lara
When people communicate, they act as participants in various linkages. In human linguistics these are analyzed at different levels of observation: in terms of assemblages (real world objects), ... linkages and linkage constituents (theoretical representations of the real world objects); linkage, participant and prop properties (theoretical constructs answerable to the relevant observational evidence about the real world objects); hierarchy of tasks and subtasks (reflecting in theory the activities of linkages and the behavior of participants). The paper proposes an analysis of a simple apologizing linkage, a common everyday situation where one person apologizes and the otheraccepts the apology. On the basis of observation of small apologizing linkages we can express certain generalizations which bring into the discussion the subject of linkage types. These represent the systematic and structured properties that focused linkages have in common on the basis of which we can make predictions about human behavior. HL analysis of tasks and subtasks offers an insight into the automatic processes behind human communication. It also shows how the choice of words can be handled in terms of selection procedures triggered by a number of factors which together represent the participant's comprehensive context.
