  • Psycholinguistic markers of Wh-adjunct movement : a case of Russian = Psiholingvistični markerji premikov k-prislovov : primer ruščine : diplomsko delo
    Čakarun, Jasna
The thesis tackles the topic of Russian wh-adjunct movement on two levels, theoretically and empirically. Parts 1 and 2 present the theory behind the syntactic phenomenon in focus, from a generative ... and a psycholinguistic viewpoint, respectively. After introducing the pivotal concepts of generative syntax, part 1 concentrates on transformations, specifically on wh-movement of syntactic items and on their traces. Part 2 continues the discussion from a psycholinguistic perspective. It introduces the core principles and approaches of the field, and explains the notion of parsing and parsing strategies. Part 3 describes the implementation of the theory from parts 1 and 2 through a psycholinguistic experiment. This was conducted to gauge the differences in processing times between two Russian wh-adjuncts, pochemu and zachem, and the complementizer chto (reason-why, purpose-why and that, respectively). Although the hypothesis predicted the highest reading time in sentences with zachem due to its lower site of base-generation in comparison to the other two items, the preliminary results did not confirm it. Contrary to what we had expected, zachem sentences showed no evidence of online storage costs (i.e. a time-consuming memory load). Although our statistical analysis of the data was basic, and the findings of the experiment are thus merely suggestive, we conclude part 3 and the thesis with an evaluation of the experiment that could help future research.
