  • New biodegradable universal tractor transmission oil based on rapeseed oil

    To avoid extensive soil and water pollution, environmentally friendly lubricants should be used. Typical representatives are vegetable oils. For reasons of quality and of course economic reasons, ... rapeseed oil is mostly used for lubricants. This oil can offer significant environmental advantages with respect to resource renewability, biodegradability, non-toxicity, as well as offering satisfactory performance in a variety of applications. Rapeseed oils are widely used in total loss systems and they are also increasingly being used in hydraulic and power transmissions. Universal Tractor Transmission Oil (UTTO) is a multi-functional tractor oil formulated for use in transmissions, axles, and hydraulic systems of tractors employing a common oil reservoir. The UTTO oil has to provide lubrication of spur and bevel differential gears, lubrication of the transmission, actuation of oil-immersed brakes, proper frictional properties to control brake chatter, and it has to serve as a hydraulic fluid. In the present work the laboratory test results for biodegradable rapeseed base UTTO oils and reference oils are described. The physical and chemical properties of all samples were determinedas well as ageing resistance of rapeseed base UTTO oil. Tribological performances of the oils were investigated using SRV high frequency test device, Four Ball test rig and FZG spur gear test. Through simulating real working parameters in a tractor hydraulic system, a model hydraulic system was used to study the behaviour of the rapeseed and selected mineral base UTTO oil.
