  • Comparison of different theoretical models for the flash temperature calculation under fretting conditions. 1G3-2
    Kalin, Mitjan ; Vižintin, Jože
Wear and friction properties of tribological interfaces depend significantly on the contact temperature and its determination is therefore of great interest for each tribological application. There ... exist a lot of different temperature calculation methods and techniques, like heat source method, flash temperature method, integral transform method, finite difference method, and finite element method. Most of these methods use quite different physical, dynamic and geometric assumptions, in terms of heat partitioning between the surfaces, contact loading, single or multiple contacts, etc. As a consequence, large discrepancy in the results can be obtained for the same contact situation. Furthermore, among the necessary assumptions for the temperature calculations are also various interface properties, which are usually unknown in all details due to many difficulties in their exact determination. That is to say, due to tribological actions interfaces are subjected to a change of mechanical, thermal and chemical properties, degradation of thin film in a boundary lubrication, phase transformations, etc. Although these are very well known facts, they are sometimes overlooked.
