  • Sociogeographic trends in contemporary Europe: the case of Slovenia
    Gosar, Anton, 1945-
Slovenia is considered to be the most successful new EU member since the country introduced the Euro in 2007 already and lead, as the first new EU member state, the EU for six month in 2008. The ... progress was achieved through country's excellent geostrategic position (between Alps, the Mediterranean and the Danubian plain) and with the opening of the borders towards West in former communistic Yugoslavia already. The economic growth reflects itself in core areas of the nation-state where cities and suburbia are blooming. There, the overall negative demographic trends and social problems are not visible. But, peripheral regions have become increasingly poor and demographically instable. In border regions along the Hungarian and Croatian border (EU Schengen ) problems have become extreme. European Union's Slovenia has, according to recent trends, almost concluded the period of the liberal and non-transparent transitional economy. The transitional times, which affected demographic, social and economic variables of the nation-state and were felt in peripheral regions extremely negative are to be changed. The general perception is that progress can be achieved if a clear vision for the future would be set. The governmentćs decision that regional disparities, which in 17 years of the existence of the Slovenian sovereignty only increased, should be minimized through a general development program is therefore logic. The often promoted state-private partnership should in the future follow the vision which the development project called "The National Development Projects for the Time-Span 2007 - 20023" has set.
