  • WAXS structural analysis of polypropylene fibers spun from two different polymer grades
    Gregor-Svetec, Diana ...
The influence of the molecular mass and molecular mass distribution of isotactic polypropylene on the development of crystalline structure in melt spun fibers was studied by wide-angle X-ray ... scattering (WAXS) measurements. Polypropylene fibers were spun and continuously drawn on a laboratory spin-draw device from a CR-polymer with narrow molecular mass distribution and from a polymer with higher molecular mass and wider molecular mass distribution. The so-called oriented "smectic" structure was found in both samples. These fibers were subsequently discontinuously drawn at 145 oC to the limiting draw ratio. Drawing at elevated temperatures causes the development of a c-axis orientation of monoclinic [alfa]-PP crystalline modification. The sample spun and drawn from the polymer with narrow molecular mass distribution and more oriented crystallites in the direction of fiber axis and a higher degree of crystallinity than the sample produced from the polymer with higher molecular mass distribution.
