  • Properties of laboratory manufactured polypropylene fibres
    Gregor-Svetec, Diana ; Malej-Kveder, Sonja
Melt-spun polypropylene fibres with higher tenacity and elastic moduli were manufactured in a continuous drawing process on a laboratory spin-draw device, while the subsequent discontinuous drawing ... leads to the high-modulus fibre with dynamic modulus of 16.9 GPa. The influence of the molecular weights of the fibre grade PP polymer, and the 50/50 blend of both polymers onthe mechanical properties of the multifilament yarns produced was investigated. Multifilament yarn spun from a high molecular weight polymer exhibits the highest value of dynamic and static elastic modulus as a consequence of the high molecular weight, as well as the highest average molecular orientation and a high degree of crystallinity. Multifilament yarn spun from the polymer blend is the most crystalline among all three samples, but its tensile strenght and elastic modulus are low due to its low molecular orientation and, in all probability, poor interaction between the segregated phases of both polymers.
