  • Katharina Hackers Die Habenichtse : ein Roman über Gewalt?
    Leskovec, Andrea
The following article looks into the phenomenon of violence in Katharina Hacker's novel The Have-Nots (2006) by referring to Bernhard Waldenfels's theory of the foreign and the phenomenological ... approximation to violence. The basic assumption of the article is that violence can be understood as a phenomenon of the foreign, and it shows the connectionas between foreignness and violence, which the novel on the one hand depicts as a really existing threat and on the other hand as a so-called hyper-phenomenon which is almost beyond comprehension. With reference to Waldenfels's concept of responsiveness, the article points out possible reactions to the phenomenon ofviolence and proves that Hacker's novel, in principle, shows that being confronted with the foreign provokes reactions. This, in turn, leads to the disappearance of known rule mechanisms and the breaking up of the indifferent passive attitude towards others hence providing the opportunity to assume social responsibility. Thus, the text decnstructs the initial assumption that the novel is a kind of social taking stock of a superficial and indifferent generation which due to their ignorance shirks responsibility or avoids to take any action at all.
