  • Redesign and flow analysis of an engine cooling fan for a combat vehicle

    Original rotor of the radial cooling fan of a combat vehicle with reveted steel plate blades was replaced by the new-design streamlined blade contour cast rotor. Besides, inadequate shape and ... position of the original cooling fanin the vehicle and especially its inlet configuration result in highly turbulent air-flow pattern that additionally deteriorates its performance. A new rotor inlet flow straightener was therefore built and further performance improvement of the fan was achieved. Very sophisticated air-flow was determined and analysed by the standard experimental techniques. A new computer-aided visualization method was applied to determine and quantify kinematic performance of the turbulent flow within the baseline and new "flow improving" coaxial leading vanes at the rotor inlet. History of the photographshots indicating the agility of particular measurement threads in the air-flow were consequently statistically processed and were used to quantify turbulent flow. Adequate results of the 2D LDA measurements were used for comparisons.
