  • The influence of strong pedestrian and bicycle flow on the capacity of rounabaouts

    Disturbances and traffic jams may occur on single lane roundabouts due to strong streams of pedestrians and cyclists. Vehicles at roundabout entries have to give free passage to pedestrians and ... cyclists. When the length of vehicle platoon at the exit is too long, it reaches the precedent entry, and the roundabout is overcrowded. The paper presents a methodology of calculating the reduction of the roundabout capacity due to pedestrian and cyclist streams. The method may be used for roundabouts in urban environments, where the cyclist and pedestrian streams are not negligible.
