The main thesis on which knowledge management is based affirms that companies by accurately managing their organizational knowledge can transform it into a source of sustainable competitive ... advantage. In fact, organizational knowledge was found to impact strategic decision making and to enable companies to successfully overcome identified obstacles or exploit market opportunities. Since knowledge can be successfully transferred only if individuals understand it, most managers are faced with the challenge how to present their ideas in a simple and logic way. The main purpose of mapping strategic knowledge is to make knowledge more explicit and to identify possible gaps in current knowledge. For these reasons, the interest in mapping knowledge among academics and practitioners has significantly increased in the last few decades. In particular, the development of the information and communication technology (ICT) has further contributed to the development of various tools for knowledge visualization (e.g. computer-based maps). The main focus of this study is on the representation of various visualization tools, which are used by managers and entrepreneurs during their decision making process. In order to get an insight into the current use of visualization tools in strategic management, we conducted an online survey on a convenience sample of 105 micro, small and medium-entrepreneurs. A central issue in this study was to find out how the visualization of knowledge is used in the process of strategic decision making. This question relates to the content, purpose, graphic method and format of the visualization tool as well as to the situation and target group. Based on the research findings we were able to discuss the implications for practitioners and delineate future research directions in the area of visualization tools for strategic decision making. The present study contributes to a better understanding of the importance of visualization for strategic decision making. The findings of this research are, therefore, helpful for both single-owners and for members of the management team who are principally involved in the process of strategy formulation.
