    The production of medically important ergot alkaloids is largely carried out through submerged culture of strains of the genus Claviceps, today. In this paper some of the problems which we ... encountered in attempts to develop a procedure for fermentative production of alkaloids are discussed. One of the main problems was solved by the isolation of high yielding Claviceps purpurea strain which produces ergotamine and ergocryptine. Scale-up of the process from laboratory to pilot and production scale is also presented.
