  • Monitoring of temperature by optical fiber DTS within soil subjected to seepage flow
    Ghafoori, Yaser ...
Seepage is a crucial safety concern in the earth-fill dams that requires precise temporal and spatial measurements. Seepage monitoring using temperature measurements has been developed and used for ... the last few decades. The optical fiber Distributed Temperature Sensor (DTS) is currently one of the most reliable instruments to measure temperature variations continuously both in time and space domains. This article studies the temperature distribution within a laboratory scaled sand-fill model subjected to seepage flow. We measured the temperature using a passive optical fiber DTS system. Two types of sand with different hydraulic conductivities were used. We measured the variation of temperature distribution in the sand-fill models by the optical fiber embedded within the sand. Obvious temperature changes were observed due to seepage propagation through the sand. The results represent the influence of seepage flow on the heat transfer process and the ability of optical fiber DTS for the detection of the small temperature variations due to heat transfer.
