  • The influence of polutants on weathering of polypropylene fibres in natural environment
    Čunko, Ružica ; Pezelj, Emira
The recent changes in the composition of the atmosphere are caused by man-made pollutants. Ever increasing concentration of certain substances in the atmosphere can cause damage to a number of ... materials. The impact of photochemical smog can mostly be attributed to the highly active nature of ozone, which is formed in surroundings with an increased concentration of pollutants, i.e. nitrogen oxides, depending on direct sunlight irridation. The purpose of this investigation is to estimate the weathering of PP fibres influenced by pollutants. Fibre samples were exposed to weathering in urban and rural environment, continuously for a year. In order to avoid intensive energy loading caused by sunlight (especially its UV component), the samples were shaded. To characterise degradation, loss of breaking strenght, breaking twist, and changes in stereoregularity (by measuring isotacticity index), as well as changes in the chemical structure (by measuring the concentration of hydroperoxide groups) have been determined.
