  • Restarting our journey with gifted students in Slovenia
Kukanja-Gabrijelčič, Mojca ; Kristanc, Nina ; Kuntner, Monika
Gifted students have the right to adequate educational opportunities, appropriately challenging and stimulating schoolwork which will challenge and stimulate the development of their full potentials. ... Teachers of gifted students, who are not properly trained, qualified and competent, can disable an appropriate development of students' needs, interests and potentials (Geak and Gross, 2008; Szymanski and Shaff, 2013). In the paper, a brief review of gifted and talented education in Slovenia is presented, focusing on the main perceptions, beliefs, and challenges that a teacher faces in everyday work with gifted students in regular classes. Also, the role of the teacher in discovering gifted students is critically investigated. In the following article, the basic terminology problems encountered by teachers in the stage of discovering gifted students are analyzed, and the results of the research are summarised, which indicate inadequate competence of teachers in the field of identifying and working with gifted and talented students, lower self-assessment skills of teachers in the field of knowledge of the personality characteristics of gifted students and problems in the proper use of teaching strategies in working with them. Despite the above, primary school teachers have mostly positive views on gifted students. The research also shows that the additional education of teachers is important for competent work with gifted students. In conclusion, possible suggestions and improvements for the empowerment of teachers in identifying gifted students are presented and some of the possible system solutions for working with gifted children in the future are described.
