  • AES depth profiling of oxides and corrosion resistance of short heated AISI 321 stainless steel
Torkar, Matjaž ; Lamut, Martin, 1977- ; Kocijan, Aleksandra
The corrosion resistance of stainless steels depends on the properties of protective oxide layer. The AISI 321 stainless steel was heated for 8 minutes at temperature 1060 [compositum]C in three ... different atmospheres. The aim of the heating was to transform the deformation induced martensite in the steel and to evaluate the influence of the atmosphere on the corrosion resistance. AES depth profiling of the oxide layer was performed. The concentration profiles of elements through the oxide layer after the heating and the results of corrosion tests in 3.5 % NaCl are presented. The concentration profiles of the elements and corrosion tests revealed that less resistant oxide film was formed in protective atmosphere and in nitrogen atmosphere. The lowest corrosion rate was achieved at sample heated in air atmosphere.
