  • Effect of Smectic A Elastic Properties on the Screw Dislocation Core Structure

    The core structure of a screw dislocation in smectic A liquid crystals has been studied using the phenomenological Landau-de Gennes theory. The corresponding free energy is expressed in terms of the ... nematic orientational order parameter, uniaxial nematic director field and complex smectic density wave. Three qualitatively different ways have been found in which the frustration along the dislocation axis is revealed: the double twist (DT), classical (CL), and broken polar (BP) solutions. The BP core structure exists for rather unconventional values of elastic constants. The stability diagram of the CL and DT core structures is presented as a function of the temperature and coupling strenght between the smectic and nematic order parameters.
