    The topic of my master's thesis is Edgar Allan Poe and his influence on German authors and literature. The first part of the thesis is focused on Edgar Allan Poe's life and his stories. He was an ... American writer, literary critic and editor. As the father of the detective story and as the first theorist of the short story he influenced authors all over the world. He was praised by the French symbolists, English authors admired his famous detective C. August Dupin but German authors preferred his short stories with central existential metaphors. Edgar Allan Poe and his stories influenced authors like Friedrich Spielhagen, Hanns Heinz Ewers, Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann, Arno Schmidt, Peter Rosei and many more. Friedrich Spielhagen was the first interpreter of Poe's short stories and an avid translator of his work. Another translator of Poe's stories was Hanns Heinz Ewers. He is also one of the authors who defended Poe's lifestyle and his addiction to drugs and alcohol. Thomas Mann's lengthy novel Buddenbrooks is connected to Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Purloined Letter" and is an example of the influence Poe and his work had on Thomas Mann. Another ardent admirer was Arno Schmidt. His novel Zettels Traum focuses on Edgar Allan Poe, his life and his stories. Peter Rosei wrote Wer war Edgar Allan? and tried to capture Poe's spirit in the story about a man lost in his addiction. Edgar Allan Poe directly in indirectly influenced the German literature and German authors.
