  • Speech as a comunication modality in multimodal communication services
    Kačič, Zdravko
Recent analysis of implementation success of different spoken dialogue system applications integration in telecom networks showed that many speech processing services succeeded commercially, however, ... a lot of services reached limited success an dwere withdrawn. Various reasons influenced the limited success of the voice driven teleservices in the past. The expectations for these services were based mostly on predictions of further development of telecommunication systems, especially with narrow- and broadband ISDN. However, development of Internet, mobile communication, and IP telephony greatly influenced the way of communication and the quality of communication services. The future success of purely voice driven teleservices, considering the limitations of the current technology, will therefore be more and more dependend on different psychological and ergonomic factors as other modes of communication are becomming increasingly competitive. The quality of services that are offered by Internet encourages the development of multimodal communication (MC) sevices with voice as one of the modalities integrated. Development of ultra low power consuption ICs will enable integration of MC services also in the next generation mobile communication devices. In the paper we will discuss different aspects of integration of speech as a communication modality in multimodal communication services of the future.
