  • Vpliv francoskega novega vala na slovensko kinematografijo 60. let : primerjava filmov Á bout de souffle in Ples v dežju : diplomska naloga
    Markič, Angelika
This thesis addresses the impact of the French New Wave on the Slovenian film director Boštjan Hladnik and his film Dancing in the Rain (Ples v dežju). I compared it with a New Wave film Breathless ... (À bout de soufflé) by Jean-Luc Godard. The first part of the thesis features the approaches of making films in France after the Second World War and the characteristics of the French New Wave. During the Second World War, France was divided into two zones: the northern zone was occupied by the Nazi Germany, whereas the southern zone was under the control of the Vichy government. Freedom of speech was repressed by both zones, resulting in forcing film directors to mainly make propaganda films which featured the values of both regimes. After the war, French directors tended to preserve the genuine French cinematography, avoiding the impacts of American cinematography. They started a movement known as %French quality% (la qualité française). However, they were opposed by young cinephiles who wanted freshness in their films. Hence, the French New Wave was born. I further examined the characteristics of film making in post-war Slovenia. During the Second World War, Slovenian cinematography was predominated by propaganda films as well. The first notable post-war film was called On our Own Land (Na svoji zemlji) and it was directed by France Štiglic. Many Slovenians identified with this film. In the 1950s, the first Slovenian commercial and youth films were made. In the 1960s, the years of the French New Wave, director Boštjan Hladnik finished his studies in Paris and worked as an assistant to the director Claude Chabrol. His first film upon returning to Ljubljana was Dancing in the Rain. In the last part of the thesis, I examined the characteristics of French New Wave film making and compared them with the films in question. The most notable features which both films share are the technical details, such as the movement of the camera and the characters, as well as filmstrip, light etc.
