Fokter, Samo K. ; Sajovic, Matjaž
Background. Impingement syndrome is a common cause for choulder pain. Patientswithout improvement after months of conservative treatment and those with ruptured rotator cuff are treated surgicaly. ... The results of such a treatment, operative technique as may be required for understanding of postoperative rehabilitation, which is described in some details, are discussed. Methods. 96 patients (101 shoulders) operated from 1992 to 1994 forshoulder impingement syndrome were available for a retrospective study witha mean follow-up period of 34 months (range, nine to 56 months). The results were graded according the UCLA criteria. In the group without rotatot cuff rupture, anterior acromioplasty was peformed in 45 cases, and 56 tendon reconstruction with acromioplsty were performed in the group with rotator cuffrupture. Results. In the whole series, a satisfactory results (UCLA>27 scores from 35 possible) was achieved in 65 patients (64,4%). Ten out of fifteen patients with poor results (UCLA<21 scores) were workers compensation cases. Conclusions. Surgical treatment of impingement syndrome mostly results in pain relief. Operation should be followed by precise rehabilitation if damaged shoulder kinematics is to be restored.
