    Background. The article presents a study on hospital expenditures on antimicrobial drugs, and antimicrobial management practices, along with their pharmacoeconomic effect. It also describes the ... development and implementation of an antimicrobial order form. Methods. Specific objectives include limiting surgical prophylaxis to 24 hours, limiting empirical therapy to 72 hours, and encouriging documentation of infection. Special efforts have been made to educate physician and to change prescribing habits. The new antimicrobial order form is restrictive. Polices have been implemented to modify antibiotic use, including form manipulations, antibiotic stop order forms, and oral switching. The form includes special red list of antibiotics, to be used only after consultation. Conclusions. Considering that the antibiotic control program has been widely used, further investigation on its success in optimising drug therapy, improving treatment outcome and curtailing the antibiotic budget should be carried out.
