    This master's thesis focuses on two questions regarding the process of foreign language learning (FLL). We wanted to assess the state of foreign phoneme acquisition by foreign language students at ... the end of their undergraduate studies, as well as determine whether they prioritise vowels over consonants in the process of FLL, if any such distinction exists. With this objective, we prepared parallel perception experiments with two language combinations: Standard Slovene vs General British in Experiment 1, and Standard Slovene vs Standard Russian (according to St. Petersburg school) in Experiment 2. We limited the selection to phonemes which we determined to be the most problematic according to the literature review. In Experiment 1, we tested 33 native Slovene students of English; in Experiment 2, 22 native Slovene students of Russian. Both experiments included a positive and a negative control group (CG). The stimuli were recorded by a native speaker of Russian and a professor of English phonetics. We used the AX discrimination method. The participants listened to 60 phonemic contrasts, played in a pseudo-randomised order, and responded whether they heard two identical or two different recordings. For each language combination, the results foregrounded the most problematic phonemes which act as perceptual magnets. Analyses of results of both experiments show that the students are able to discriminate foreign phonemes well, and that they consistently perform better in discriminating vocalic contrasts. This confirms our hypothesis that students prioritise vowels in FLL, which was supported by the results of CGs.
