    In the article we use formal-constructional and semantic features to define unconventional replies as a special type of phrasemes (subtype of phraseological replies) and as a special paremiological ... genre. We define them as fixed and inadequate, mostly humorous or absurd reply of a person B to a statement of a person A. Pilot research conducted on 192 Slovak speakers is presented. We determine passive and active knowledge of 20 unconventional replies and the degree to which they are recognized as units belonging to a specific type and genre. We also present a list of other unconventional replies and variants. These findings provide valuable insight into the relative magnitude of the paremiological genre.
