    The antimicrobial combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole is active in vitro against varius gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Long-term use has led to the emergence of resistance in ... some bacteria. Clinically it is useful for treatment and prophylaxis of selected infections of the genitourinary, gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. It is indicated for most nocardia asteroides infections and is the antimicrobial agent of choice for therapy and prophylaxis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Adverse reactions associated with the use of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole in patientswithout HIV infection are rare. The drug is contraindicated for women who are pregnant.
