  • Fatigue strength and microstructural features of spring steel
    Šuštaršič, Borivoj ...
Knowleadge about the local dynamic properties of steel, as well as the local loading conditions is absolutely necessary for the fatigue analysis and life time prediction of spring steel components. ... Mono-leaf springs of specific geometry made of 51CrV4 spring steel manufactured in the Slovenian steel plant Štore Steel are of interest in this case. The spring steel was manufactured with a modified technology resulting in a better cleanliness, as well as type and size of inclusions. All this should have the positive influence on the final fatigue strength of steel. Fatigue strength of the selected steel was determined in different loading modes; i.e. tension, tension-compression and rotating-bending for two different heat-treatment conditions and two outmost directions of alloying elements segregations. For determination of S-N curves standard smooth and notched cylindrical and Charpy V-notched specimens with different stress concentration factors were used. Fatigue testing of tension-compression and Charpy V-notched specimens was performed at IMT, Ljubljana, and the dynamic testing of rotating-bending specimens was performed at IME, University of Leoben, Austria in the frame of Austria-Slovenia bilateral collaboration. Microstructural characterisation by light and scanning electron microscopy of the selected steel was performed, as well as fractographic examination of fractured surfaces. The results will be used for fatigue life prediction of spring steels using the local stress gradient concept, taking into account the selected leaf spring geometry, the mechanical properties of spring steel and the conditions of fatigue.
