    Aluminum foams are prospective class of cell materials that offer a variety of applications in fields such as lightweight constructions or crash-energy management. Due to interesting combination of ... physical and mechanical properties, such as high stiffness at low specific weight, high impact energy absorption, flame and heat resistance, sound absorption, aluminum foams are usually used in aircraft and aerospace industries, for armored vehicles, in car and shipbuilding industries, in civil engineering, as well as in biomedical industry. There exist many preparation methods for foaming aluminum and aluminum alloys, such as casting and foaming the metallic precursors. Among these, powder metallurgy (PM) is method for making close-cell foams and it is the best selection, especially for production of net-shape parts, providing excellent quality of end products. Application of AlSi12 powder as matrix and TiH2 powder as foaming agent is presented in our study. Both powders were homogeneously mixed, compacted to certain density, and sintered. Though foaming agent is activated at relatively low temperature (approximately 400 C) and sintering temperature of matrix is higher (above 570 C), the foaming procedure is not as simple as it looks. However, not only different temperatures of matrix and foaming compound activities, also the density of precursors influences the foaming process. Parameters for the synthesis of aluminum foams need to be carefully chosen.
