  • Aoutgassing [i.e. Outgassing] of hydrogen from stainless steel vacuum chamber
    Avdiaj, Sefer ; Šetina, Janez
Due to outgassing effect of inner surface of calibration chamber, exact determination of calibration pressure in primary vacuum calibration methods for pressures below 10[sup]{-6} Pa is limited. ... Stainless steel is the most common construction material for ultra high vacuum (UHV) and extremely high vacuum (XHV) chambers. Hydrogen is the predominant residual gas in stainless steel vacuum systems at very low pressures i.e. in the UHV and XHV ranges, therefore the reduction of hydrogen outgassing rate is the most challenging problem in achieving pressures in those ranges. In this paper a stainless steel chamber with wall thickness 2.62 mm was examined with the aim of mitigating the outgassing rate. The heat treatments are carried out in air at 250 [compositum]C for 380 h and 350 [compositum]C for 140 h. Outgassing rate Q = 2.86x10[sup]{-13} mbar 1 s[sup]{-1} cm[sup]{-2} was achieved in stainless steel 304 L at room temperature after baking the system at 250 [compositum]C for 380 h, while this outgassing rate was reduced even further to 5.7x10[sup]{-14} mbar 1 s[sup]{-1} cm[sup]{-2} using T = 350 [compositum]C for 140 h.
