  • The absorptive capacity of SMEs as a barrier to regional development [Elektronski vir]
Rebernik, Miroslav ; Krošlin, Tadej ; Bradač Hojnik, Barbara
This paper explores absorptive capacity as a barrier to regional development. In the first part we outline concepts of absorptive capacity, unlearning and knowledge exchange. On the basis of Global ... Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) data we argue that the development of absorptive capacity in Slovenia is stagnant because of the low level of internationalization of Slovenian firms, the local market and local employment; path dependency of socialist remnants such as anti-competiveness values or egalitarism; and a lack of internal and external activation triggers due to low innovativeness. Data from another survey displayed a very low level of cooperation between universities and SMEs. Firms do not develop their absorptive capacity, which would enable them to acquire new knowledge and adapt it to their needs.
