    Krošlin, Tadej ; Širec, Karin
Firm growth is a key to economic development and to creation of wealth and employment. The recent research in entrepreneurship (Slovenian Entrepreneurship Observatory and Global Entrepreneurship ... Monitor) stated that entrepreneurial potential is not fully utilized. In the centre of our study is the innovativeness as one of at most important dimension of intrapreneurship process in established companies. Innovativeness is based on the potential of a company to exploit business opportunities, and to improve its performance. Therefore it is important to understand, which determinants influence the innovativeness, and what their relations to company performance and growth are. To facilitate the intrapreneurship process and improve the performance of the company, its innovation potential is to be increased. The aim of the study is to determine the most influential factors of innovativeness, which can be controlled by entrepreneurs, to find possible correlations with selected growth and performance indicators of the company, and to learn about differences in the growth and performance among companies that practice an above-average number of selected determinants of innovation potential. For the purpose of our research, in July 2005, an extensive questionnaire was sent to all 597 Slovenian medium-sized (50 - 249 employees) manufacturing firms, with 21 % response rate. Data gathered with intrapreneurship survey was put in the database and complemented for each respondent with its accounting data from balance sheet and income statement. We tested several hypotheses on innovativeness, using statistical methods measuring the association or correlation between some determinants of innovation potential, growth and performance indicators. Results show, that companies using larger proportion of selected determinants scored higher values on innovation indicators (input, process and output), on average performed better on selected performance indicators and achieved higher growth rates. Efficiency and effectiveness of current business is a necessary condition for firms to be able to invest their time, effort,t and other resources into invention- and- innovation activities and is a main source of good business performance today. But their future lies hidden in the development of innovation potential and innovations.
