  • Performance of exterior coatings on spruce wood, treated with a boron containing wood preservative
    Pavlič, Matjaž ...
Exterior coatings may not provide sufficient protection of wood against biodeterioration. In order to minimize the decay risk, wood can be impregnated with biocides before finishing. However, ... pre-treatment of wood may have an effect on some important properties of surface coatings. We impregnated spruce wood specimens with a new preservative formulation, containing the ester of boric acid with an alkanolamine. The aim of our research was to establish a possible influence of this biocide on performance of acrylic and alkyd stains on pre-treated wood. We studied drying characteristics, stackability, adhesion, and permeability of the coatings. A significant influence of the boron based preservative was observed.
