Fatigue strength of material from the weakest part of a steel butt-weld joint with surface defect which size is comparable with the size of grains was analysed. The results were compared with the ... fatigue strength of the same material free of such defects. The weakest part of weld joints is coarse grain heat affected zone (CGHAZ). Simulation of a weld thermal cycle was used for preparation of the microstructure of a CGHAZ. Then, almost the same microstructure was modelled by using furnace for grain growth at high temperature and quenching. Fatigue strength was experimentally determined on such a "CGHAZ". Small defect was made by indenting Vikers pyramid. Residual stresses arise in the surrounding of the indentation due to indenting. Those stresses have effect on the measured fatigue strength. The effects of defects of the same size on specimens with and without residual stresses were compared. The highest fatigue strength was determined on specimens without the defects, the Iowest one on specimens with the defects when residual stresses are not present. Existing compressive residual stresses in specimens with the defects, when residual stresses are present, have influence on the fatigue crack initiation life. The result is higher fatigue strength.
