    Mass housing is the basic need in every society. If we find it banal it is only a subjective attitude related to space and time. Banal can be found in many other human activities. The target of this ... paper is Slovenian self-built housing which is the result of certain political and economical circumstances.It is analyzed from various aspects: the choice of building type, the choice and use of materials, dimensions, patterns, architectural elements, decoration and substitutes. It is predominantly the domain of low income population. Because of the very dimension of it the search for individual identity makes it unordered. It may be described as a subculture not at all in favor of architectural profession. As there are many other professions and aspects to be considered it is possible to understand and tolerate it. Only then the question can be raised whether there is something to do and why and how.
