  • Higiena rok v multidisciplinarni pediatrični enoti za intenzivno terapijo
    Dragaš, Ana Zlata ...
Our investigations on hand hygiene were conducted in the multidiciplinary paediatric intensive therapy unit of Surgery of the University Medical Centre in Ljubljana. We were eager to know more about ... the efficiency of handwashing and disinfection at daily work in the unit. It was also our aim toget insight into the degree of protection of medical gloves for patients andhealth care workers. The evaluation of handwashing and disinfection was conducted by the method of Austrian and German Microbiological Societies resp. now by consensus reached CEN (European Committee of Normalisation) norms. The permeability of gloves for microorganisms was tested by method of Gehardt and by our own. The results showed no statistically significant difference by Wilcoxon pair test between microbicidal soaps and plain liquid Kalium soap. The microbial population on hands was significantly reduced after disinfection with 70-percent isopropanol. In spite of alcoholic disinfection on some hands remained enteroviruses, Echo and Coxsackie, which were not sensitive to isopropanol used. In such cases 90 percent ethanol is effective. The physical permeabiIity of gloves tested was 5-percent of gloves tested, the permeabiIity for bacteria 19-percent, for viruses 87,5-percent. Gloves, used at tracheal aspiration showed good protection for bacteria, but were in some cases permeable for viruses. Strict attention should be payed to hand hygiene, which includes no touch tecnique, washing and disinfection of hands, hand care and use of gloves, especially in intensive care and therapy units. The consensus should be accepted by all hospitals in the world with special care to intensive care units.
