  • Challenging dilemmas about values in education
    Potočan, Vojko ; Mulej, Matjaž
The current social development is changing the European higher education scene through increased international student and faculty mobility, internationalization of study programs and schools, and ... the opening of local higher-education markets to international competition. These processes make new pressures on management of higher education institutions and expose them to new challenges in terms of schools' adaptation to changes in their educational and others environments. An important part of innovation of this changing is also how to transmit appropriate knowledge, skills and values from society to people, i.e. in our case the prevailing values-culture-ethics-norms (VCEN) of business schools to students in their education process. In the discussion about the values of education we face the dilemma of the relation between the (given) values of education and need to change them. In each society the values of education are relatively (formally or informally) defined on all levels, because the society wishes to transmit its prevailing values to the young generation. On the others hand, the historical rule and duty of educational systems include creation, promotion and transmit VCEN (and especially values), which are more developed (and/or more modern) as the prevailing values of society. For that reason, education institutions can (and must), through the pedagogic process, enforce new values and to transmit them to students. A typical example of such dilemma in the frame of the work of the university institutions is inclusion of business ethics into the pedagogic process. But this also opens many questions from the conceptual, through methodological, to implementation view points. For our work we chose the discussion about possible ways to transmit the new values to students. The contribution discusses two theses: (1) How to more holistically understand the role and importance of values for education process, and (2) How education institutions transmit selected values on student through education process.
