    Cornelia Schollmayer-Costa (1834-1913) came from a well-known Carniolian family. Her father, Heinrich Costa (1799-1871), was a patriot, author of several historical memoirs and travelogues. Her ... brother, Ethbin Heinrich Costa (1832-1875), was a politician, lawyer and writer. In the 1860s he was also the mayor of Ljubljana, an intellectual who was interested in Carniolian history, theatre and Slovenian cultural history. This was the family in which Cornelia Costa, socially quite engaged as well, grew up. She was married to Franz Schollmayer (1826-1891) who worked in her brother's legal office in 1860. This paper presents Cornelia's business letters to the Imperial public library in St. Petersburg in the 1870s. The correspondence concerns her sale of the precious bequest of the Costa family, which included a number of invaluable prints, manuscripts and books, to the library due to financial difficulties after her father's and brother's death. Although Cornelia Schollmayer-Costa spoke French as well, she used German in her negotiations with the library, which was not unusual in that period. Carniola, a province of the Habsburg monarchy, was a meeting point of two cultures, German and Slovene. At the time, the language of communication among Slovene intellectuals who mostly studies in Vienna, the capital of the monarchy, was predominantly German even at home, in the periphery, although they could all speak Slovene. This case study analyzes the stylistic characteristics of Cornelia Schollmayer-Costa's language used in her business letters, which were a vehicle for cultural transfer and cross-cultural communication. It also presents the interference that occured due to cross-influence of German and Slovene as well as highlights the impact of the German norms in business correspondence on Schollmayer-Costa's writing that still retains some elements of personal correspondence.
