  • Sienkiewiczowskie postacie w powieści Frana Finžagara Pod svobodnim soncem
    Smolej, Tone
The paper deals with the influence of Sienkiewicz's novels on F. S. Finžgar's Pod svobodnim soncem. With Fire and Sword provides various motifs related in particular to Zagloba. For instance, the ... rescue of a kidnapped virgin, threatned by the kidnapper's troops as well as by wolves, is undoubtedly a very important motif. Some other motifs, which in Sienkiewicz's texts are merely suggested (references to magic, a masked visit of the enemy troop's camp) are fully developed in Finžgar's works. Further, from Quo vadis he took the motif of a Christian virgin intent to convert a pagan soldier and in both novels, Saint Paul has a key role. Quo vadis is also the source fot the name of the merchant Epafrodit, a character of Finžgar's novel, who also has some traits of Petronius. The analysis shows that for the Slovene author reading Sienkiewicz's works proved to be highly productive.
