  • Značilnosti bolnikov z zlomom kolka in njihova zmožnost hoje na oddelku za travmatološko kirurgijo Splošne bolnišnice Izola = Characteristics of patients with hip fracture and their walking ability at trauma surgery ward of Isola General Hospital
    Jober, Pija ...
Background: Hip fracture is a common injury among the elderly. The majority of fractures are treated surgically. The aim of our study was to establish the characteristics of patients with hip ... fracture and determine the factors that influence their progress in walking. We also wanted to find out whether the type of surgery affects walking progress and where the patients were discharged. Methods: We included 24 patients with hip fracture treated at the trauma surgery ward of the Isola General Hospital in September and October 2009. Fracture location was determined, and their functional independence (using Functional Independence Measure - FIM) and walking ability (using Walking Ability Index - WAI) were monitored from admission. Data on length of stay were also analysed. Results: Median age was 81.5 years. The injury happened when falling from standing or sitting height, at home or in residential care. All the patients underwent surgery. At admission and discharge they required a lot of assistance. Mean length of stay was 14 days. At discharge, seven patients were able to walk independently using walker or crutches; their mean age was 72.4 years, only one of them was over 80 years old. Eleven patients were sent to a spa for rehabilitation, four were sent to a nursing hospital, five returned to residential care, and one patient died at the trauma surgery ward. Conclusions: The patients were mainly women over 80 years of age. They required a lot of assistance at admission as well as at discharge. Over two thirds of the patients could not walk independently at discharge, regardless of fracture type and surgery type.
