    Enlarged lymph nodes may be the first warning symptom of cancer. They mya indicate the presence of metastases or the primary site for the disease. Cancerous adenopathy does not itself have any ... specific features. From 1989 to 1998, 464 first-time oncological patients were diagnosed and treated on the haemato-oncological unit of the Department of Paediatrics, Clinical centre, Ljubljana (central nervous system primaries were excluded). 85 children (17 % of on- cological cases) were diagnosed by cytological or pathohistological examination of enlarged lymph nodes. Conclusions: Cancer is a life-threateningdisease that may present with lymph node enlargement. Clinicians should proceed to examine the enlarged node cytologically or pathohistologically wherever there are clinical grounds for the presence of cancer.
