  • Zunajbolnišnična pljučnica - sodobni pogledi in lastne izkušnje = Community - acquired pneumonia - current concepts and our own experience
    Dernič, Jani
Eighty-seven out patients with community acquired pneumonia were included in aprospective, noncomparative, multicentre, clinical trial conducted in Slovenia. lncluded were female and male patients ... aged 18 to 65 (average age 44.6 +- 14.3). Thirty percent of the patients were smokers and 25% of them presented with accompanying diseases. The clinical diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia was confirmed by x-ray examination. The efficacy evaluation was based on clinical symptoms and laboratory findings, including CRP. The patients were treated with clarithromycin (Fromilid) in doses of 500 mg administered every 12 hours. The efficacy of the treatment was evaluated atthe end of the treatment period of on average duration of 11.7 +- 2.7 days. The treatment was assessed as successful in 97% of the patients (cure of improvement). The most frequently experienced edverse reactions included mild and transient gastrointestinal symptoms (16% of the patients). Three patients discontinued treatment due to adverse reactions of moderate severity. Empirical treatment with clarithromycin proved highly effective in the management of community-acquired pneumonia of milder severity in adults and was associated with an acceptable incidence of adverse reactions.
