  • Ultrazvok srca v diagnostiki pljučne embolije = Echocardiograpy in diagnosing pulmonary embolism
    Vene, Nina
Echocardiography is increasingly performed in patients with suspected pulmonary embolism because of the wide accessibility and possibility of performing it at the bedside. In hemodynamically ... compromised patients, this method is providing a rapid diagnosis and immediate therapy and could exclude other causes of shock, including aortic dissection, pericardial tamponade and left or right ventricular infarction. The main role of transthoracic echocardiography is to reveal any signs of acute right ventricular pressure overload and hypokinesis and increased pulmonary arterial pressure. Transesophageal echocardiography enables a direct diagnosis of pulmonary embolism, with the possibility of direct visualisation of blood clots in the proximal parts of both pulmonary arteries. In patients with acute pulmonary embolism, signs of acute right ventricular pressure overload and hypokinesis are associated with a worse prognosis and are important for deciding on the type of therapy.
