  • Veliki skovik Otus scops na Goričkem = Eurasian scops owl Otus scops at Goričko (NE Slovenia)
    Štumberger, Borut
In 1997, the first census of Eurasian Scops Owls was carried out in thc Goričko district (NE Slovenia) with the Samwald & Samwald (1992) method. Precisely 210 calling males were recorded in the ... investigared area covering 442 km2 (Fig. 2). Most of the males were assembled in a few calling groups, particularly in the N and W of Goričko. The largest of them consised of 64 males, and it was only in one case that a single calling male was established. The breeding density (assessed on the basis of the recorded calling males) was 0.5 pair/km2. In separate 25 km2 large areas the breeding density reached 1.9 pair/km2, while locally - in up to 1 km2 large areas - it reached up to 6 pairs/km2. The altitudinal belt (with the centre of vertical distribution) was situated between 290 and 340 m (Fig. 3). Calling males occupied peaks of Goričko hills (63.8%), slopes (31.9%) and valleys (4.3%). The calling site or territory selection by two spatially and acoustically separated populations of Eurasian Scops Owls at Goričko is clearly influenced by the different orientation of the valleys (Fig. 4). In the NE of Goričko, no less than 87.7% of the calling males occupy the belts oftraditional orchards. In view of the current situation of this species in Central Europe, no such numerous and abundant population was expected in the Goričko district. At the moment this population constitutes part of the Eurasian Scops Owl's northern breeding range in Europe.
