    The article describes the education of stomatology in Slovenia from 1949 to 1999. The education of stomatology at Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana is divided into flour periods: foundation period, ... period of extensive study, period of intensive study and transition to 6-year curriculum. Foundation period (1949-1960) is characterised by pioneer work of the first teachers headed by Professor Dr. Jože Rant who started the education with low number ofstudents and who also organised building of the new Dental Clinic facilities. Period of extensive study (1961-1970) is characterised by implementation of numerus clausus to 50 new students, opening of the High Dental School in Maribor, two-levels of stomatology education and high number of new stomatologists. Period of intensivestudy (1971-1989) is determined by closure of theHigh Dental School in Maribor, one level 5-years curriculum, implementation of new dental specialities and high number of specialists, the start of postgraduate master of science program and interdisciplinary dental research and by the foundation of Centre for dental research. In the year 1989the new 6-years long curriculum was introduced with emphasis on preventiveapproach and more hours for practical skills training. In-this period less students and specialists graduated, the interdisciplinary researchwas strengthened and several international scientific meetings were organised. The research work at Division of Stomatology from the modest beginning improved with more interdisciplinary co-operation leading to increased number of publications in national and international journals and to42 M Sc. and 38 Ph. D. Thesis. The research results were also presented at several national and international congresses. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
