    Recently, NASA launched the Deep Space 1 spacecraft equipped with a high-performance ion-propulsion system. However, this is not the first spacecraft to use an ion source as the primary propulsion ... system. For some time thay have been used for orbit correction of geosynchronous satellites. The engine provides 10 times the specific impulse of chemical propulsion. Therefore ion propulsion systems reduce the weight and cost of carrying propellant. in this paper the physical basics of such systems are described.
