  • Možnosti radiografije pri oceni stanja čeljustne kosti = Radiographic methods for the assessment of alveolar bone
    Fidler, Aleš, 1973- ; Skalerič, Uroš, 1945-2023
Periodontal disease is known to progress in bursts and at a variable rate in different sites. The goal of periodontal examination is to assess the state ofperiodontal tissues and activity of the ... disease. Radiographic examination isan integral part of periodontal examination. From the baseline radiograph, the initial status of alveolar bone can be estimated. Comparing the baseline radiograph with follow-up radiographs provides information about disease activity. A 30-60% change in mineralization can be detected with the naked eye. The need for more objective quantitative assessment of changes in alveolar bone, especially for research purposes, has led to the development ofmore sensitive methods. Measuring the distance between the cemento-enamel junction and the alveolar bone margin was introduced over 40 years ago. This is the simplest method, which allows measurements in one dimension only. The latest improvements of this method, with reference points located in magnifiedimages on a computer monitor, permit the detection of 0.5 mm change with 99% confidence. Digital subtraction radiography appeared 20 years ago. Itis based on the principle of subtraction of images. Structures that have remained unchanged are cancelled out, and only differences appear as dark or light areas on a neutral gray background in the subtracted image. With this method, 1-5% changes in mineralization can be detected, and the area or mass of these changes can be calculated. Compact computer tomography (CCT) was introduced a year ago. Its main advantages over conventional CT are lower radiation dose and very high resolution (0.5 mm). Teeth with surrounding bone can be visualized three-dimensionally. The main drawback is high cost.
